Bart Millard, lead singer for MercyMe, describes the heart behind the song, “Even If”.

“Even If” was going to be our second or third single on the album because you always have a game plan that you think is right. By the time the album was finished we were like, what are we doing, this is the song for the album. The reason we’re in ministry, the reason we do this, is to reach people where they are and this is that song for us.

The whole thing is about, man we’ve had bad days.  I’ve had awful days. With a child having a chronic illness there are times when I feel I just can’t do this anymore. But I want to be like Shadrack, Meshak, and Abednego who said to Nebuchadnezzar,“We don’t have to defend our decision here. If you throw us into the blazing furnace, our God will deliver us from it.  But even if He doesn’t we still are not going to bow. We’ll still worship; He’s still worthy to be praised” (Daniel 3:16-18). I want to be like those guys.

That’s what the song talks about. I know what He’s capable of. Even if He doesn’t come through, he’s still my hope because of what He’s already done. It’s not what the circumstances are doing to me; circumstances can’t change what Christ has done for me long before this.  If nothing else, He’s the only thing that prepared me for the circumstance.

The sorrow and the hurt would all go away if Jesus just said the word.  But even if He doesn’t, our hope is still in Him. Whatever happens to us we will cling to Jesus because He has always been faithful to us and we know he is able. This knowledge allows us to sing with confidence, “it is well with my soul”.
